Dear Mr. Braque is an ode to the titular namesake, Georges Braque (1882-1963) a French painter who pioneered, along with Picasso, the multi-perspective Cubist style. This revolutionary new concept essentially deconstructed the subject and reconstituted it within a single image showing multiple aspects from different vantage points. At least, that was the theory. In reality the effect was to create a fractured looking composition with open-ended geometric forms whose relationships are not immediately clear and appears primarily as an abstract composition of strong broken lines and forms made of gradations of color. Cubist art, greatly indebted to the work of Paul Cezanne, from an art-historical perspective proved to be the ideal combination of a radical and refreshing look with a curious conceptual underpinning. Unfortunately the very talented Mr. Braque turned out to be no match for the marketing skills of his compatriot, Picasso, whose name is now synonymous with Cubism among the general public.
