In the field of horticulture a hybrid is notated with an "x" between the parent plants' names. Pierre Joseph Redoute (French, 1789-1840) is recognized as the pinnacle of artistic botanical illustration, and is particularly known for his series of rose renderings. As was typical for the genre, the specimen was often depicted truncated (a device used to show all aspects of the plant on the small area of a page) and floating on a white ground with all elements exposed. Savaldor Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989), perhaps the most notorious of art world showmen, used "Surrealism"- the artistic expression of the subconscious - as a pretext for creating hyper real diagrams of fantastical mutations of everyday things.
