The pristine white marble statuary of the ancient Greeks is iconic, but only relatively recently did we learn that our received and unexamined assumptions about them were entirely ill informed; when new, these pure white sculptures were, in fact, a riot of polychrome – the stone served only as a blank canvas for the bright colors painted on to them so that they would appear more "real." This revelation was the fruit of critical inquiry performed with an open mind, thanks to which we understand history, and ourselves, better.
